DRAWER DIVIDER

Photo 8- Cutting a dado for the drawer divider.

Set up once again to cut dadoes with the router, this time for the small divider between the two drawers (photo 8). The important thing here is that the dado be centered on each of the two shelves.

Dead Blow Mallet
Rubber surface is easy on wood.

Photo 9- Fit the drawer divider into its dadoes.

If you need a rubber mallet, click here.

Once this is cut fit the divider in the dadoes as in photo 9 and tap it together. Be gentle with your mallet on these thin parts. Drill holes for nails if you are using hardwoods (photo 10) and set the nails with a nailset (photo 11). There's no need for glue on the divider since it is locked in place.

Titebond Glue
Available in different sizes.

ASSEMBLY

Photo 12- Put glue in the dadoes and set the shelves in place.

8" Hardwood Square

Nobex Adjustable Miter Square

Photo 13- Once assembled, check for square.

If you need a square, click here.

Lay a bead of glue in the dadoes of one of the sides and fit in the two lower shelves with the divider, and then the two upper shelves (photo 12). Glue the dadoes on the other side, put it in place and tap it down with a mallet. Check the assembly for square (photo 13) and rack it one direction or the other to square it up if it is not right. If the fit of the shelves in the dadoes is snug you shouldn't need clamps to hold it together, but if it's loose in a few spots put on a clamp or two to hold it together. The clamps may well weigh more than the piece itself and could bend it out of square by the sheer force of gravity; beware and adjust accordingly. Once you are happy drill for nails (hardwoods only) and tap them in (photo 14).
