How much table saw do you need? If you know that all you will do is cut 3/4" stock for the small parts on most furniture projects, you might do just fine with a small contractor's saw. These portable units have smaller blades, less power and the fence doesn't go very far, but they are cheap. I once saw one built into a large table with an auxiliary fence that allowed it to cut whole sheets of plywood.

But as soon as you want to cut thicker stock will need a larger saw. 10" stationary table saws are the standard in most shops, because they have the versatility most people need. 3/4 horsepower is underpowered for such a saw, 1 horse is adequate but 1-1/2 or higher will serve you best when you are cutting 2" thick hardwoods.

If you can, get a good fence like a Beismeyer or similar. It makes life a lot easier having a rip fence that quickly moves to a new position and accurately and rigidly locates there. As well, look at how far the fence can move from the blade. If it goes 24" it will reach half way through a sheet of plywood. But if you cut a lot of plywood you want a fence that goes the full 4 feet to make ripping any width of plywood easy and accurate.

Get a good blade for your table saw. For 90% of what you do a carbide combination blade will do the trick. You don't need separate rip and cross-cut blades. It you cut a lot of veneered plywood or laminates you may want to get a special fine cut blade, which has more teeth and thus chips out less on the edge of the cut. A dado cutter (click here) helps a great deal on a table saw for making wide cuts such as grooves for shelves etc. And it's a good idea to have a cheapo steel blade to use for cutting dirty or lumber so you don't mess up your good blades. That cheap steel blade is inexpensive to get sharpened when it dulls from dirt or nails.
