Scroll Saws

Scroll down (pardon the pun) to see the scroll saws for sale.

Scroll saws are fun, versatile and relatively inexpensive woodworking machines. Their big advantage is that they cut curves well, and much tighter than a band saw. You can find many different patterns for projects on a scroll saw, wherever you will find other woodworking plans. (Check out the links page on this site.)

But a scroll saw is more than just a fun tool for cutting out fanciful curves. It has a place among all the rest of the machines in a well-supplied woodshop, because it will do a few things others won't. You can start a cut in the middle of a board with a scroll saw by drilling a hole through and passing the blade through the hole, then connecting it to the machine. Also, a scroll saw will cut much tighter curves than a band saw, though it cuts more slowly. Its blades are generally finer toothed, leaving a smoother surface.

Don't expect a smaller, lower powered scroll saw to cut through 2" thick wood very fast at all. 3/4" thick is about the limit for a smaller machine. Get a bunch of extra blades too, because you'll break them. But they don't cost that much.
