We are all taught that when you complete assembling your woodworking project, you now have to start sanding it before finishing. But, what did they do before sandpaper was available? They used sharp handplanes and scrapers to smooth the surface. It takes some learning to be able to use these tools well, but in many circumstances they will smooth a rough surface and prepare it for finish faster, with less steps. With sandpaper you must begin with the roughest grit that is capaple of removing your worst defects, then progressively work your way up to finer grits. With a smoothing plane, one pass does the job. On contoured surfaces, a scraper will give you the surface you are looking for.

If you choose to use sandpaper, use it only as much as you really need to. If your surface is fairly smooth to begin with, you don't necessarily need to start with 80 or 100 grit. And, with most woods you don't need to sand past 180 or 220 grit to get a good finish. The smoothness of the finish itself will determine how polished the surface appears. So, if you are using a build-up finish like varnish, shellac, lacquer etc., polishing the finish is your last step. Begin with 400 grit wet sanding paper and work your way up to 600 at least, or into the 1,000 or finer grits for a highly polished surface.
