Get the most from your router by having what you need to take advantage of its versatility. Build your own jigs and router setups for specialized situations, or buy one or more of the premade jigs. Often, these are far more accurate than what you can easily make yourself in your shop, because they are machined to fine tolerances. A variety of different jigs and attachments are available for routers giving wide capability. Let's take a quick look at some of these:

DOVETAIL JIGS- A large number of dovetail jigs exist, all taking advantage of the same basic principle. A dovetail shaped router bit cuts both the pins and tails following a machined guide. Some use a straight flute bit for the tails, depending on the type of joint being cut. With all dovetail jigs, you can make very tight joints by carefully adjusting your setup. So, why is there so much price difference between jigs? The less expensive jigs will make fewer types of joints, will not let you vary the spacing between the dovetails, and are light duty tools that will hold up well if used only occasionally. The more expensive jigs make more types of dovetails, allow you to vary the spacing, and are very solidly built to hold up to much repeated use. I've made good tight joints with very light, simple dovetail jigs, but I had a lot more fun using the Omnijig and Leigh jigs. Before buying any dovetail jig, understand what its full capabilities are and that it will make all the joint types you want. Is it wide enough to make your widest drawer? Finally, do you want to invest in a high quality tool or just get the minimum you need for your project needs now?

INCRA JIGS- These jigs have been around for some time now and have proven very popular. Basically what they do is provide an easy, convenient means of moving a fence in specific, discrete increments allowing you to easily make a variety of tight, attractive joints like dovetails, finger joints, etc. It makes it very fast and easy to make puzzle-like joints that will intrique people. It's kind of like clock-making- you are working very carefully on a small area with high accuracy to make a complicated result. Check out the videos at the Incra product links above to get an idea of what these things do.

TENONING JIGS- Tenoning jigs for a router can make doing high quality joinery for chairs, tables, carcasses etc. very easy and effective. As with any jig, know the capability of the tool before you buy. What thickness of wood is it limited to? How deep a mortise will it make? How thick a tenon? When you understand HOW the jig works, you'll understand WHAT the jig will and will not do.
