Handsaws

Even though you may have a table, band, radial arm and scroll saw, you will still run into situations that call for a simple hand saw. Use a coping saw to cope molding joints as shown in the article on this site on moldings. A dovetail saw is a basic component of your handtool collection, useful for much more than cutting dovetails by hand. A hand miter box such as that shown below costs far less than an electric miter saw and makes very accurate cuts along any angle up to 45o. While you may not use a larger hand crosscut saw very often, you will run into situations where you must complete a stopped cut in the middle of a board made with a circular blade, or you'll use it where your work is so large or long that it won't fit on your machine.

Many people prefer Japanese handsaws which cut on the pull stroke rather than the push. It's a matter of preference, both types work as well as the operator is able to control them.
