When considering dowel jigs, look at how each jig refers the hole- that is, what plane or planes of reference does it use to locate the hole. The first jig shown here centers the hole along the thickness of the part, handy for edge gluing but inconvenient for off-center holes, for which you need a spacer to make the offset. The other jigs refer off one face, making offset holes a snap.
