How large a band saw should you buy? I've had two band saws in my shop, a nice 14" Delta and an old, small 9", which runs off a washing machine motor. That small one comes in handy when you have the big one set up or it has the wrong blade on it for what you want to do.

But you won't want to get two right away, so focus on your present needs, and what you can afford. 9" saws are around $175 and work fine if you are just cutting small parts from 3/4" lumber.

12" band saws are more serious, having a greater throat depth. This is the best choice for the small shop that will give the saw light duty.

But 12 saws are limited to a 6 inch high cut. With 14" saws, you can add a riser block between the major castings (12 inch saws are one solid casting) which raises the cutting height to 12 inches. This is important for doing resaw. 14 inch saws generally have stronger motors too, which you will need for cutting through 8 to 10 inches of wood.

If you plan to do a lot of resaw consider replacing the guides in your saw with the Carter ball bearing guides shown below. These make the saw much more accurate.
